The reaction between glycine and potassium hexacyanoferrate(III), in alkaline medium, at constant ionic strength, gave glyoxylic acid. The rate of the reaction was dependent on the first powers of the concentrations of substrate and oxidant, but was independent of the concentration of alkali in the range studied. The slow step of the reaction involved the formation of a radical intermediate, which was detected by ESR spectroscopy as a 7-line spectrum with peak intensity ratios of 1:5:11:14:11:5:1.en_US
